We need to talk…boy, do we need to talk… There is so much information flying around out there right now, who can say what’s real and what’s not? What’s true? What really happened and what is being made up to scare us, to divide us, and destroy us?  

I know for a fact that family members are turning against other family members. Best friends are fighting. Parents and children are not talking to each other…talk about chaos!  Sheeeesh…

Are your kids running around with a sign in their hands, protesting the injustices of the world?  Are they chanting “no justice no peace”? Are they getting into fights with family members who have different opinions?  There is no doubt that our young people have opinions. Strong opinions. And to that, I say BRAVO. Hey, be the change you want to see in the world, right?

But here’s the thing. They can run around all day long, yelling that the world needs change…that the time has come to stand up for all people, regardless of the color of their skin. They can go to protests and pump their fists in the air for whatever cause has taken up space in their heart, but is that really going to accomplish anything?

Yes, it will bring awareness to a broken system. But is awareness really going to change anything? Or will it just fade away with time, like it always does?

I’ll tell you what will bring change. And I mean lasting change. Helping your teen channel all of that anger and pain and passion into something that will actually make a difference in their community AND in their life…helping them discover a career that will address the brokenness of society and allow them to be a conduit for change through the work that they choose to do.

Our kids may not have the slightest idea that the “thing” that is keeping them up at night could become an amazing career opportunity or that the passion that is burning in their soul might lead them to take the next step toward a career that has the potential to make a real difference for whatever they care about. Whatever it is. And I’m not just talking about the protests or the black lives matter movement. 

I’m sure you’ve noticed that there are quite a few other things that are causing the world to fall apart right now. Besides the riots and protests, there is also a global pandemic in progress, with undoubtedly more to come. Unemployment is at an all time high, there’s an election coming up that promises to be total chaos, businesses are closing their doors, police reform is critical and imminent. Why not have your teens and young adults be part of the solution? All kinds of people are hurting right now. Talk to your kid! Find out what matters to him or her. Help them pick the most important thing and then let them run with it!
