I think a lot of people are spending a lot of time thinking about temporary solutions to a permanent problem. And this may be the reason why we still have the problem in the first place. It’s so easy to get caught up in the moment. To rant and rave about the latest big ticket news item. To demand answers and change and action! 

But then we go back to our normal, everyday lives and the reporters all go home and something or someone else steals the spotlight. It’s a cycle that needs to be broken. What we are doing isn’t working. Our country is falling apart and we’re letting it happen.

So how about we try something different? How about we put down our temporary signs of protest and pick up careers that will empower us to do what’s necessary to create real, lasting change? There are countless careers and occupations that will help change our future. So many options for our teens and young adults, and actually for people of all ages who want to be part of the solution.

Let’s just think about this for a minute…if social inequity keeps you up at night, pursue a career in law, politics, community development, advocacy, or non profit management.

If better education is your thing, then be a teacher or better yet, get involved in education administration. If you are appalled at the lack of healthcare available to underprivileged communities, get involved in medicine as a doctor, nurse, therapist, hospital administrator, etc. If you hate fake news, or how the media works, get a degree in communication and shake things up!

And there will never be a shortage of jobs in justice and peace work. There are literally hundreds of careers to choose from if you’re looking for a more peaceful and just world to live in.

Social work, therapists, international aid organizations, mediators, cross cultural communication, writers, teachers, counselors, diplomats, conflict management, community organizers…I could go on all day. So If you’re pumped up with all that’s wrong with the world, get yourself into a career that will allow you to change it. Go beyond the protest.
